Modjadji Camp in Modjadji Cycad Reserve

Type:Self-catering in Modjadji Cycad Reserve
From:R278 / night (per person sharing)
Description
Modjadji Cultural Camp provides adventure travellers a fascinating mixture of cultural interaction, and natural wonders. Situated in a forest of ancient cycads, the camp’s community owners are members of the Lobedu community who are subjects of the Modjadji Royal Family, Southern Africa’s only matriarchal royal dynasty.

Modjadji Cultural Camp provides visitors an interesting combination of cultural and natural activities. It’s situated in the Modjadji Cycad Reserve where guests have the opportunity of walking through the ancient cycad forest. Called the Modjadji Palm, visitors can view the largest concentration of a single cycad species in the world. There is a cycad nursery, picnic sites, trails through the forest and an information centre.

Traditionally this area was considered the garden of the Rain Queen, the matriarchal leader of the Lobedu dynasty. Visitors to Modjadji can arrange a visit to the Royal Kraal, and for those visiting the area during the spring, attending the Rain Making festivals of the locals Indunas can be a fascinating experience. The Modjadji area is lush and fertile, with a large rural population with both commercial and subsistence agriculture. Stop and buy your fresh fruit and vegetables along the roads, and enjoy the hospitality of a very friendly community.

Modjadji Cultural Camp has five stand-alone thatched rondavels, each with two three-quarter beds, chairs and a bedside stand. Linen is not provided as part of the tariff, but can be hired at a separate fee. This needs to be arranged at the time of booking. Ablutions are communal, with flush toilets, shower and basins.

The kitchen, dining and camp-fire facilities are communal, and give adventure travellers an ideal opportunity to get to meet and interact with other like-minded travellers. You will share a gas hob and camp fire for cooking, as well as fridge and freezer for storage of food. The necessary pots, crockery and cutlery are also supplied. Catering by local villagers can be arranged.
